Langenstein named Mechanic of the Year
Charlie Langenstein didn’t believe his friend, a usual prankster, when he said recently that Langenstein was headed for the Northeast Modified Hall of Fame.
So Langenstein was shocked when a committee member called the next day with the news. Langenstein, who has more than 250 feature wins and numerous track and series championships in Northeast Dirt Modifieds, will be honored as Mechanic of the year at the reception on May 25. With the
HOF
honor, he joins standouts like Will Cagle and Kenny Brightbill.
“It’s a pretty cool dean,” he said. “I don’t want to compare it to Cooperstown or
Canton
, but it’s very prestigious, I think If you look at the list, there are some big time race car drivers that come through the sport.”
Langenstein, born in south
New Jersey
, has spent his life around cars. Now the mechanical supervisor of the Nos. 24/48 shop, he oversees all mechanical aspects of the race car. Langenstein, who started at Hendrick Motorsports eight years ago with Jerry Nadeau and the No. 25 team, has helped Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Chevrolet team win the 2006 and 2007 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championships. Prior to joining Hendrick, he helped Rob Moroso’s team win the 1989 Busch (now Nationwide) Series title.
As a youngster, Langenstein helped his father work on his weekend race cars, picking up tips from top drivers and fabricators on the local circuit. When he wasn’t competing locally, Langenstein was hitchhiking to a
Delaware
track, which was about 90 miles from his home in
New Castle
,
Del.
“I did whatever I had to do to get to the race track,” he said. “I just love racing. I love the competition, and I love to win races.”
During high school, he drove to
Trenton
,
N.J.
, to work on asphalt modifieds. He snuck his way into the pits and spent the night in his 1969 Pontiac GTO, showering each morning at a truck stop before the race. At the track, he developed a relationship with a low-dollar team. As a result, he was invited to travel with the team to
Indianapolis
for the 1980 Indy 500. Langenstein did what he had to – in this case get good grades – to miss the month of May during his senior year.
Over time, Langenstein connected with race teams and assisted with different projects. The self-taught engineer designed and built a chassis for Petty Enterprises that won at Rockingham Motor Speedway in the fall of 1997. He also helped develop production line fleet race cars for driving school and entertainment industries. Langenstein helped design the world’s first two-seater IndyCar.
This summer, Langenstein and his wife Beth will run a car in the Bandolero Series at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Their race team – KAR Racing – is named after the initials of Langenstein’s children – Kyle, Austin, Kendall, Kasey and Riley.
